A Contemporary Tradition in the SF Bay Area
Mills College offers an intimate and intensely creative environment for dancers, choreographers, and dance scholars to pursue rigorous graduate study in contemporary dance. Through daily studio practice, passionate choreographic inquiry, and challenging seminar courses, our graduate students broaden their knowledge of dance in its myriad facets and are invited to embody that understanding through their creative and intellectual work.
Classes in somatics, world dance, traditional modern technique, dance film and technology, stagecraft, acting, history, theory, improvisation, pedagogy, and choreographic and scholarly research allow each artist/scholar to be able to communicate her or his creative vision with an awareness of dance’s power as a social, cultural, and spiritual force. Working closely with renowned guest artists, students perform and choreograph works for proscenium stage and low-tech space. They can also participate in the Mills Repertory Dance Company, where they learn and perform dances by such artists as Wanjiru Kamuyu, Merce Cunningham, Molissa Fenley, and Doug Varone.
We offer two graduate degrees in dance:
