What’s the best way to get to know the School of Education at Mills College? While we try to describe our programs and course offerings on the website, the best way to really get to know us is to make a personal visit. You are encouraged to attend one of our monthly Information Sessions to meet faculty, staff, alumni, and current students. After attending an Information Session, you may want to sign up for an Application Workshop (offered in October, December, and March), speak directly with one of our current students or recent alumni, or sit in on a class; these opportunities may be arranged by calling 510.430.3170 or writing to education@mills.edu.
What credentials and degrees do you offer? The credentials we offer are: multiple subject teaching credential, single subject teaching credential (in art, English, foreign languages, math, science, and social science), early childhood special education credential (Level I and Level II), administrative services credential (Tier I and Tier II). The degrees we offer are: MA degree in education with concentrations in early childhood, child life in hospitals, infant mental health, leadership in early childhood, teaching, and educational leadership; MBA/and MA in educational leadership joint degree; doctor of education degree (EdD) in educational leadership.
What kind of credential do I need to teach at a public school in California? In general, to teach elementary school grades K–5, you need a multiple subjects credential; to teach middle or high school grades 6–12, you need a single subject credential. Both credentials are offered in our Teacher Preparation Program.
Are men admitted to Mills College? Yes! While the undergraduate College upholds a proud tradition as a single-sex liberal arts institution for women, all graduate programs at Mills enroll both men and women.
What are the application deadlines? The priority deadline for all Fall applications to the School of Education is December 31; admission notifications will be sent in March. The priority application deadline for the joint MBA/MA in Educational Leadership program is January 15. After these priority deadlines, we will continue to accept applications on a rolling basis throughout spring; decisions will be made as space permits in each program so it is important to submit materials as soon as possible. A complete application includes an application form with statement of purpose, recommendations, and transcripts.
How do I submit my application?
You may submit an application using our online process or as hard copy sent to the Office of Graduate Admission, using the printable forms on our website. All transcripts and recommendations also go to the Office of Graduate Admission. Materials may arrive at different times, although an application is not complete until the application form with statement of purpose, recommendations, and transcripts have all been received.
What are the admission criteria? We consider a number of factors in making admission decisions, including the quality of the personal statement, previous course work from undergraduate and graduate programs, and letters of reference. We also interview most applicants, either in person or by phone. Faculty in each program review application files, taking into consideration potential for success in academic classes as well as in professional settings.
What should be included in my statement of purpose?
This essay should describe the ways in which you are a good match for the program to which you are applying. You may use the questions on the application form as a general guideline for presenting your relevant past experiences and background, your current interest in a particular program, and your professional intentions after completing the credential and/or degree program. You should be thorough yet concise, using approximately 500–750 words (two to three pages).
Who should write my letters of recommendation?
We suggest that you request at least one of your three recommendations from an academic source (generally a faculty member who knows you as a student in an academic course), and at least one from a practitioner (someone who knows you in a school, organization, or professional context). You may want to provide your recommenders with a résumé, a draft of your statement of purpose, and any other information relevant to your application. Please note: Online applicants' recommenders will be sent a form only after you have submitted your application, so if you want them to have more time, you may provide them with a PDF form from our website.
What about the 40 or 100 hours verification forms or state tests required by the program to which I'm applying?
If you are applying to a credential program that requires verification of 40 classroom hours and state tests, or to the Child Life program that requires verification of 100 hours in a hospital setting working with children, these are officially due by the time of enrollment, in August. The application review process will not be held up if all other application materials have been submitted; if admitted without these requirements, your letter will state that admission is pending receipt of required documents. However, faculty do prefer to see these materials as part of the application, so it's important to submit as soon as possible. Please see our Requirements and Deadlines page for further details.
Do you require an interview for admission? In our highly personalized admission process, we believe that it’s most important to find a good match between the applicant and the program of interest. We want to get to know you and understand your educational goals before making an admission decision, so we do interview most applicants. Teacher education applicants may be interviewed in a small group with one or two other prospective students.
How will an interview be scheduled? Once we have your application, a staff member will contact you to schedule an interview with a faculty member in the program for which you have applied. This process will start in mid-January and continue through Spring semester as we receive applications on a rolling basis. If you are not in the area, a phone interview will be scheduled.
Do you require the GRE? No, we do not consider GRE scores as an admission criterion. We have found that other sources of information gathered through our application process are better admission indicators than standardized test scores.
If admitted, may I defer my enrollment to another semester? Yes, after paying your enrollment deposit, you may automatically defer for one academic year. For one semester only, you must have the permission of the program director. After one academic year, you must reapply for admission.
May I transfer credits from another institution? Yes, for some degree programs. Each program director determines the particular course credits that may be awarded for prior course work within the limits of 2 Mills credits toward a master's degree and 6 Mills credits toward a doctoral degree.
Do you offer financial aid? Yes, the School of Education offers direct scholarship awards to most of our students in addition to assistantships for students in some programs. Please visit our tuition and financial aid page for more information.
How do I apply for financial aid?
You should complete a FAFSA after January 1, before February 1, indicating Mills College as a recipient of your information. This provides us with sufficient time to make awards based on financial need as well as merit. You may use estimated tax information if necessary and then revise your FAFSA once you have filed your taxes.
Do you offer on-campus housing for graduate students at Mills? Mills offers a variety of housing options for graduate students to live on our beautiful residential campus. Graduate women have the option of residing in one of our historic mediterranean-style residence halls that accept graduate students. Men and women can enjoy our new Courtyard Townhouses which overlook the Bay Area. We also offer family housing and some specialty housing choices. When you apply to Mills, please indicate your interest in on-campus housing, and you will be sent a separate housing application.
What is the Mills College Children’s School? The Children’s School was founded in 1926 and is the oldest laboratory school west of the Mississippi River. It serves the community through training early childhood education professionals and providing quality education to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and K–5 students. Students in our early childhood education programs are awarded assistantships at the school in which they have the opportunity to conduct research and gain teaching experience under the guidance of master teachers.
