What’s the best way to get to know the School of Education at Mills College?

While we try to describe our programs and course offerings on this website, the best way to really get to know us is to make a personal visit. You are encouraged to attend one of our monthly Information Sessions to meet faculty, staff, and current students. After attending an Information Session, you may want to sign up for an Application Workshop (offered in December), speak directly with one of our current students or recent alumni, or sit in on a class; these opportunities may be arranged by calling 510.430.3170 or writing to education@mills.edu.

What credentials and degrees do you offer?

We offer the multiple subject teaching credential, single subject teaching credential (in art, English, foreign languages, math, science, and social science), early childhood special education credential (Tier I and Tier II), administrative services credential (Tier I and Tier II), master of arts degree in education, and doctor of education degree.

What kind of credential do I need to teach at a public school in California?

In general, to teach elementary school grades K–5, you need a multiple subjects credential; to teach middle or high school grades 6–12, you need a single subject credential. Both credentials are offered in our Teacher Preparation Program.

Are men admitted to Mills College?

Yes! While the undergraduate College upholds a proud tradition as a single-sex liberal arts institution for women, all graduate programs at Mills enroll both men and women.

What are the application deadlines?

The priority deadline for all applications to the School of Education is February 1; decisions are made by April 1 for all applications received by this date. After February 1 we continue to accept applications on a rolling basis until programs are filled. For those programs that admit students in the spring semester (Early Childhood Education and Educational Leadership), the priority deadline is November 1.

What are the admission criteria?

We consider a number of factors in making admission decisions, including the quality of the personal statement, previous course work from undergraduate and graduate programs, and letters of reference. We also interview every applicant, either in person or by phone.

Why do you require an interview for admission?

In our highly personalized admission process, we believe that it’s most important to find a good match between the applicant and the program of interest. We want to get to know you and understand your educational goals before making an admission decision.

What if I change my mind about which program I’m most interested in applying to?

On occasion, an applicant to one program realizes that another of our programs is a better fit to her or his needs. We are happy to accommodate these changes in order to find the best match for prospective students.

Do you require the GRE?

No, we do not consider GRE scores as an admission criterion. We have found that other sources of information gathered through our application process are better admission indicators than standardized test scores.

If admitted, may I defer my enrollment to another semester?

Yes, after paying your enrollment deposit, you may automatically defer for one academic year. For one semester only, you must have the permission of the program director. After one academic year, you must reapply for admission.

May I transfer credits from another institution?

Yes, for some degree programs. Each program director determines the particular course credits that may be awarded for prior course work within the limits of 1.5 Mills credits toward a master's degree and 6 Mills credits toward a doctoral degree.

Do you offer financial aid?

Yes, the School of Education offers direct scholarship awards to most of our students in addition to assistantships for students in some programs. Please visit our tuition and financial aid page for more information.

Do you offer on-campus housing for graduate students at Mills?

Mills offers a variety of housing options for graduate students to live on our beautiful residential campus. Graduate women have the option of residing in one of our historic mediterranean-style residence halls that accept graduate students. Men and women can enjoy our new Courtyard Townhouses which overlook the Bay Area. We also offer family housing and some specialty housing choices. When you apply to Mills, please indicate your interest in on-campus housing, and you will be sent a separate housing application.

What is the Mills College Children’s School?

The Children’s School has an 80-year year tradition of serving the community through training early childhood education professionals and providing quality education to infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and K–5 students. ECE students are awarded assistantships at the school in which they have the opportunity to conduct research and gain teaching experience under the guidance of master teachers.

While at Mills can I take courses at other institutions and count them toward my degree?

You may cross-register with UC Berkeley to take graduate or upper-division courses there. Graduate students in their second or third semester may enroll in specialized courses offered by other Bay Area colleges and universities. Cross enrollment is limited to one course per semester, and the course must not be offered at Mills.
