580 Split is an annual journal of arts and literature published by graduate students of the English Department at Mills College. This national literary journal includes innovative and risk-taking fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art and is one of the few literary journals carried by the Oakland Public Library. 580 Split is also distributed in well-known Bay Area bookstores.

Call for submissions
580 Split is seeking submissions for its 15th issue. Submissions will be accepted through October 28, 2012. We welcome exemplary works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual art. Experimental work, international writers, and marginalized perspectives are highly encouraged.
The theme for the next issue is Obsession. As writers and artists, we may best understand the moment when an initial interest teeters and tips over to a full-blown obsession. In many cases it is not something we see coming, much less something we can control. Standing outside of reason, obsession seems to be one of the main forces that drives artistic creation. We are looking for work that inquires into, is inspired by, or speaks directly to the idea of obsession.
