Graduate English Requirements & Deadlines

Application Deadlines

The priority deadline for receipt of all application materials is December 15 for fall admission. English graduate programs (including Book Art and Creative Writing) do not accept applications for the spring term. Visit our application page to apply online or download forms.

Most English graduate programs review applications on a rolling admission basis after the priority deadline. Please note that the MFA in Book Art and Creative Writing does not accept applications on a rolling admissions basis. All application materials for this program must be received by December 15 to be considered for fall admission.

Applications are reviewed when all supporting materials are received, and official notification of an admission decision is sent in writing from the Office of Graduate Admission. We encourage all applicants to apply before the December 15 deadline.

All applicants to the graduate degree and certificate programs at Mills College are required to submit the following:

Special Admission Requirements

In addition to the regular graduate admission requirements, all applicants to the graduate programs in English are required to complete an English supplemental application, which details program-specific requirements.

Applicants to the MFA degree in creative writing (prose or poetry) must submit a writing sample that consists of 15–20 pages of poetry, a short story, or an excerpt of a novel.  MA applicants must submit a 15 to 20 page essay sample.  Book Art applicants must submit a visual portfolio of 15-25 images, in addition to the written portflio sample for the applicable creative writing program.   Please see the supplemental application for more detailed instructions.

If applicants wish to have their visual portfolio work returned, they must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the appropriate amount of postage.

International students should be aware of the Special Information for International Students section which outlines additional admission requirements.
