Staffed by graduate English students, The Place for Writers is central to the graduate experience at Mills. Less a place than a community, The Place produces a roving series of programs and readings. Our focus is on building relationships outside of the classroom—among Mills graduate students writers, scholars, and activists—and between Mills and the Bay Area literary community, along with professionals in the fields of writing, publishing, and teaching.
The Place for Writers staff produce programs and events, including the Publishing Internship Program, the Community Teaching Project, Professional Survival Weekend (an annual free conference), the Works in Progress reading series, the Contemporary Writers Series, and an open house each semester. The staff keep students updated regarding opportunities and deadlines for publications, grants, residencies, and other local and national opportunities through The Place for Writers' poetry and prose blogs.
The Place is one of innovation—it was Place staff who founded both the Publishing Internship Program and the Community Teaching Project. Previous Place staff curated the Borderbend interdisciplinary performance series, and Wrecks in Progress, an informal series for students from various genres to get together and read their work in its rough beginnings.
