Sung Chang

Through labor-intensive artwork, I intend to connect the concept of labor with the monotonous routines of daily life. Labor is insignificant and overlooked until accumulated into a greater whole. Similarly, our everyday rituals seem trivial at first glance but collectively form what our very beings are composed of. My art bridges the two. Using personal and cultural residue as my materials, I utilize repetitive, menial processes such as cutting and folding in order to produce a mass amounts of items that are outwardly useless but together contain a powerful archive. Such messages speak through patterns formed in my artwork, patterns symbolizing the largely repetitive existence of a labor source. Through my own experiences in creating my art, I intend to connect with these labor sources and illustrate the means by which individuals can contribute to a larger and more complete vision.
