Melissa McDonough: Sustaining Ourselves Locally
East Oakland is known to some as a place of violent crime and troubled youth, but to members of Sol it represents an opportunity for healing and growth. Sol, Sustaining Ourselves Locally is a home grown cooperative and
community garden nestled under the BART tracks near International & 23rd. With outreach to area youth the members of Sol are bringing sustainability, healthy eating, and job opportunities to a forgotten and underserved part of Oakland. But they ran into some trouble when they tried to broaden their outreach to adults. Reporter Melissa McDonough explores how one group is putting the community into a community garden. |
