How do I get access to Element K training?
All entering students are given access to Element K. You can access Element K by going to the Mills Resource Portal and logging in with your username and password.
If you are unable to access the site you can fill out and submit the enrollment form to activate account. We handle activation requests Monday through Friday and send confirmation emails after accounts have been activated. If you are enrolled in College 005, your account could already be set up. Faculty and staff can access Element K from the MyMills

What is Element K?

Element K is a Web-based technology training. All current Mills College students, faculty, and staff have access to this service 24/7.
Where can I use Element K?
You have access to Element K anywhere you have internet access. We recommend, however, that you do not use a dial-in connections as they are too slow.

What is Brainbench?

Brainbench is an "independent certification authority." It isn't "affiliated with or approved by any major software vendor." It is a certification and will look good on a resume. It is not required for College 005 and will not fulfill any College 005 requirements.

If you're looking for a particular Brainbench exam, search for that software as you would for any course. If there are Brainbench tests for that software, there should be two sections in the search results, one specifically for Brainbench exams.

The quoted parts are from the Element K Help page, under Brainbench in the right-hand column, where more information on Brainbench can also be found.

What do I do when my session has expired?

Disclaimer. There are other reasons a session will expire. They should all by fixed if you try logging in again.

This often happen if when you attempt to access the assessment at the end of each MILE Module from the link provided.  Element K may make changes on their that can break the link. There is a way around this!

Element K and Firewalls
A firewall is a system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network.

If your computer is located behind a company firewall, you might not be able to access portions of the Element K Web site from work. Company firewalls sometimes block JavaScript, or won't let you log in to a secure server -- which Element K requires.

If your company's firewall blocks JavaScript, you won't be able to enter the classrooms from your work computer.
If your company firewall allows JavaScript but doesn't allow access to a secure server, you won't be able to access the classrooms from work.
Check with your system administrator to find out what external sites you can access at your location.

College 005 Questions:

What do I have to do to complete College 005?
College 5 consists of four components: The three basic-level MS Office Suite courses and the MILE course.
The course includes 9 course assessments: The three basic-level MS Office Suite assessments and the six MILE assessments.
The course title are:
  • Mills Information Literacy Evaluation (M.I.L.E.)
  • Microsoft® Office Word 2007: Level 1
  • Microsoft® Office Excel® 2007: Level 1
  • Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2007: Level 1

You will find links to all of these on the Element K Welcome page on the right-hand side of the screen.

Do I have to register for the course?

Yes.  All entering students are registered for College 005 during their first years at Mills College.  In order for the work done in Element K to get on your transcript to fulfil the requirement you must register for the College 005 as you would any other class you are taking.

How do I know if I completed the requirements?

The administrator of the course (i.e. the instructor) receives an assessment report from Element K which provides your scores on each assessment.

How do I know what scores I have?

From the Element K Welcome screen, click on the "My Account" tab and navigate to the "Transcript" link from the menu presented.

Can I get out of this somehow?

The faculty have determined that beginning in the Fall of 2004, all entering students (freshwomen and transfers) must successfully complete College 005 to fulfil the Information Literacy/Information Technology Skill of the General Education requirement.

If you feel that you already know the information presented in the course, you may attempt to go right to the assessments. However, we strongly encourage you to take the course in its entirety, even if it is a review. All students must successfully pass each of the nine assessments with a score of 70% or above to pass the College 005.

Who should I contact if I have question?

If we have not sufficiently answered your questions, please send us an email - elementk@mills.edu - and we will do our best to assist.   Or, you can come to the Olin Library, room 145 during our Office Hours:

  • Tuesday 1-2
  • Wednesday 1:30 - 2:30

Go into the library and walk straight back and knock or ring the doorbell.

You can also call 2021 to make an appointment if these times do not fit your schedule.

When will my grades be posted to my Mills transcript?

Grades can only be posted to your Mills transcript at the end of a semester, this includes College 005.  If you received an Incomplete for College 005, and passed the assessments after the end of the semester your grade can not be changed until the end of the following semester.
