Mills College is pleased to offer Web-based technology training for all current Mills College students, faculty, and staff. As a member of the Mills community, you have access to a powerful resource -- self-paced, interactive training on using computing applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or Power Point. Or perhaps you want to learn how to use Dreamweaver, for constructing web pages, or Photoshop, for manipulating photos in a digital environment. Mills College and Element K give you the power to choose from hundreds of training options. You don't need to own or install the software you're learning about because Element K simulates the environment for you. Also, you can access Element K from any computer that has a connection to the Internet. (The latest version of Internet Explorer for MAC or PC recommended for full functionality.)
Enrolling in Element K:
Staff, faculty, and students can all fill out and submit the enrollment form to activate accounts. We handle activation requests Monday through Friday and send confirmation emails after accounts have been activated.
If you are enrolled in College 005, your account could already be set up. Note that "enrolling in Element K" is not the same as "enrolling in College 005." Even without enrolling, everyone should be able to log into Element K. Staff and Faculty need to use myMILLS; students should use the Mills Portal. Please send email to elementk@mills.edu if you can't. Once you log in, you will know if your account isn't active if you go to the course catalog and don't see anything listed. Please check out the FAQ page if you have any problems.
Logging in for students:
- Go to Mills Resource Portal.
- Click on blue Student the button
- Once in the student page, scroll down the page, click on “To Element K.”
- The Element K website should open up with you logged in.
- When you’re done, hit “Logout.”
Taking a course:
After you have enrolled and logged into Element K (Start Training link on left), click on the Catalog tab and it will automatically bring you to the My Catalog page. Here, you can simply choose a course to take by choosing from the menu or by using the 'search catalog' feature. It usually works best to search for a course using just the software name without the version number. Also, course assessments are sometimes available to help identify where your skill gaps are. When available, an orange 'begin course assessment' button is displayed upon clicking on the course you want to take. After you complete the assessment, Element K will indicate which parts of the training course you don't need to take based on the test. On the same note, Element K will keep track of what courses and parts of courses you have completed.
Logging out of Element K:
When you are done with a training session, be sure to click the Logout button on the right of the Element K window and close the browser. If you do not Logout and close the window, the next user can easily access your account.
