Research Tools

The Mills College Library provides a wide variety of research tools to assist the Mills community in pursuing their academic and leisure goals.

Catalog
The Mills online Catalog, which is called Minerva, is a primary resource.  Minerva lists all materials in the Mills Library including books, journal/magazine subscriptions, audio, DVDs and videos, rare books, college archives, fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, course reserves, etc.  You can search Minerva using keywords, as well as author, title, subject and more.

Journals & Articles
To find articles in magazines, journals and newspapers, use the Journals & Articles link found in the right navigation column on every Library webpage.  The Library subscribes to over 50 general and subject-related databases which are used to locate specific articles.  When you’re first starting out, consider using a broad general database such as Academic Search Premier or Proquest Research Library.

Course Reserves
Many Mills classes have reading assignments which are available electronically through the Catalog in a digitized PDF format.  Other assigned readings may include actual books, CDs, videos, etc. which are located at the Library Circulation Desk and available for 2-hour or 24-hour checkout.

Online Journals
The Library subscribes to many electronic journals which contain the full text of specific articles.  Use this Online Journals link to search by journal title and to determine the dates of availability.

Online Reference Books
The Library has several subscriptions to online reference works which include encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, specialized subject encyclopedias, etc.  Use the Online Reference Books link for a complete list which includes Gale Virtual Reference Library, xReferplus, and the Grove dictionaries of Art and Music.

Other Library Catalogs
Use this link to find information about other Bay Area Libraries, as well as to access the catalogs for UC system libraries (MELVYL) and the Oakland Public Library.
