Degree Requirements

NOTE: The degree requirements listed below are applicable to all students entering during academic year 2016-2017. Students who entered during a previous academic year should view the degree requirements in their entering year catalog in the catalog archives. Students who wish to switch to the 2016-17 major and minor requirements should submit a new Declaration of Major or Declaration of Minor form to the M Center.

History Major  |  History Minor

History Major

(a minimum of 44 semester course credits)

Core requirements:

Select a concentration in one of three areas listed below and take its two-semester introductory sequence:

European

HIST 011 The West and Its Cultural Traditions I (3)

HIST 012 The West and Its Cultural Traditions II (3)

United States

HIST 031 American History I (3)

HIST 032 American History II (3)

Asian

HIST 061 China and Japan to 1800 (3)

HIST 062 China and Japan Since 1800 (3)

Other Requirements:

All must take HIST 189 and 190 and should do so in sequence in the spring of the junior and fall of the senior year, respectively.

HIST 189 History and Its Methods (4)

HIST 190 Senior Thesis Seminar (4)

And select courses that add up to 30 additional semester course credits in history. At least 14 of these credits should be outside your area of concentration. Upon approval from a history advisor, one of these elective courses may be taken outside the department.

History Minor

Select five history courses in consultation with history faculty advisor. One of the five courses must be HIST 189 History and Its Methods (4).
