The women’s, gender and sexuality studies major can be shaped by the student to reflect an emphasis on women’s studies, queer studies, or both. The department also offers a minor in women’s studies and a minor in queer studies. Women’s, gender and sexuality studies at Mills introduces students to the processes by which gender and sexuality are socially constructed in different historical, geographical, and cultural contexts, with particular attention to the intersection of gender and sexuality with other categories of difference such as race, class, ability, religion, and national origin. Majors and minors learn to use interdisciplinary methodological approaches for feminist and queer research and, through supervised fieldwork and study, become familiar with the relationship between research and activism.
