Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot

Reduce
Reduce means to eliminate waste at the source. It involves altering the design, manufacture, or use of products and materials to reduce the amount and toxicity of what gets thrown away. Here are some simple ways you can reduce your waste:
• Carry a reusable mug instead of using disposable plastic bottles or paper cups
• Take only the food you will eat and only one napkin at mealtimes
• Bring your own bag or don’t take a bag when you are shopping
• Reduce your junk mail

Reuse
Reuse is a type of source reduction which uses even fewer resources than recycling. Here are some ideas:
• Use both sides of a piece of paper
• Donate/buy reusable items
• Shop/donate at used clothing stores

Recycle
Recycling is important in order to divert waste from the landfill or incinerators and into products that can be used again. How to Recycle at Mills. Buying recycled is just as important as recycling because it establishes and stimulates the markets for recycled materials. The greater the consumer’s demand for recycled content products, the more manufacturers will purchase the items we put in the recycling bin and the more stable the whole market will be.

Rot
Rot means to compost your organic material.  Composting decomposes organic waste, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, with microorganisms (mainly bacteria and fungi), which turns materials that would be sitting in a landfill into nutrient-rich matter that can be used to improve the quality of soil and help plants grow.
