Family Weekend 2013 Schedule: Friday

When you first arrive on campus, please register at the locations and times noted below. At registration, we will provide you with a folder that includes program updates, a campus map, and your name badge. The name badge will serve as your entry pass to all events listed in the program below, unless otherwise noted.

Your name badge also allows you access to Mills athletic facilities. Please bring appropriate clothing and equipment if you wish to participate in our Tennis Festival or take advantage of our swimming pool, fitness center, tennis courts, or fitness trail.

Meal tickets for Founders Commons are available for purchase with cash at the door; no advance reservations are necessary.

The program below is subject to change.

Classes at 10:00 am and 11:00 am are canceled this day to allow students to attend Convocation.

Celebrate the 161st anniversary of Mills College with President Alecia A. DeCoudreaux, the new Mills Provost and Dean of the Faculty Kimberley Phillips, and the Mills community at Convocation, the traditional opening ceremony of the academic year.

No-host Lunch

Founders Commons and the Tea Shop offer an extensive choice of menu options. No advance reservations are necessary; Mills students may use their meal plan or Mills Points.

Meet members of the faculty and staff at Mills who support your student in their academic and co-curricular endeavors at this special reception exclusively for our Family Weekend guests.

Mills College Botanic Garden Herbal Remedies Workshop
2:30 pm–4:00 pm
Join Botanic Garden and Greenhouse Manager Ann Prentiss for a tour and workshop on making your own herbal remedies.

Academic Showcases
3:00 pm–3:45 pm

Select from a variety of student-faculty showcases and discover some of the fascinating and creative work going on in and out of the classrooms at Mills.

Book Art Studio Tour and Demonstration
See a demonstration of letterpress printing by current students and bring home a print keepsake from Mills’ own Eucalyptus Press.

Professor Joseph Kahn and Research Associate Erica Hodgin from the Mills College School of Education will discuss Civic Engagement.

Assistant Professor of Biology Jenn Smith and student researchers in the Barrett Scholars project will discuss their research of California Ground Squirrels.

Mills College Art Museum Online Collection Archive Presentation
4:00 pm–5:00 pm

Learn about the museum’s new online collection archive from Museum Director Stephanie Hanor. With over 10,000 works of art, the museum has the largest permanent collection of any liberal arts college on the West Coast. The museum is in the process of digitizing its collection with support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. This initiative allows the public to search collection records and images through the museum’s website, dramatically improving accessibility to the collection while supporting student training in museum practices and collection management.

Jane’s Stroll

Learn more about Mills from Jane Cudlip King ’42 as she conducts an easy walking tour around campus, complete with stories from the past and present.

Residence Hall Open Houses
4:00 pm–5:30 pm
Come visit Ethel Moore, Mary Morse, Orchard Meadow, and Warren Olney Residence Halls. Whether you're curious to see where today’s residents live or lived here in the past and want to reminisce, you’ll enjoy seeing the charming Mediterranean-style buildings and inviting rooms and common areas.

Spirituality and Religion on Campus
4:00 pm–5:30 pm
What’s the difference between “spirituality” and “religion”? Are students really interested in matters of faith? Engage in these and other topics in an interactive presentation offered by the Rev. Laura C. Engelken, director of spiritual and religious life. Learn more about the spiritual experiences of students nationwide as well as here on campus.

No-host Dinner
5:00 pm–7:00 pm
Dine with your Mills student in picturesque Founders Commons and enjoy sweeping views of the Mills campus. Sample the wide array of delicious food choices that emphasize organic and fresh local ingredients. Mills students may use their meal plan or Mills Points.

Family-Style Supper
6:00 pm–8:00 pm
Mingle with Mills students and alumnae/i during a delicious family-style dinner in beautiful, historic Orchard Meadow Dining Hall. Please note that advance reservations and an additional fee are required to attend this dinner. If your Mills student is attending, they may use their Meal Plan or Mills Points; standard dinner rates apply.

Experiments in the Fault Zone Opening Reception
6:00 pm–8:00 pm

Celebrate the opening of the Mills College Art Museum exhibition Experiments in the Fault Zone, which explores the innovative history of the fine arts at Mills College.

Mills College v. Menlo College Volleyball
7:00 pm
Cheer for our Mills student-athletes as they take on Menlo College.

Darius Milhaud Concert

Littlefield Concert Hall
Hear the music of the late Dave Brubeck, MA ’46, performed by his son Darius Brubeck and a quartet of exceptional students from the Brubeck Institute in Stockton, California.

Mills After Dark Party
8:00 pm–10:00 pm
Round out your evening with tasty hors d’oeuvres and beverages, live music, dancing, and a chance to talk with Mills alumnae/i at the charming Reinhardt Alumnae House.
