Commencement: Residential Checkout

Residence Hall and On-Campus Residents Checkout

Information detailing checkout procedures will be sent to all students living on campus from the Division of Student Life. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

Deadline for January Graduates

January graduates must vacate the residence halls, the Courtyard Townhouses, Ross House, Larsen House and the Prospect Hill Apartments by 12:00 pm on Wednesday, December 18. January graduates living in the Underwood Apartments must vacate their residences by 12:00 pm on Tuesday, December 31. Students living on campus must schedule a check-out appointment with the Resident Assistant (RA) or House Manager (or complete Express Check-Out), vacate their rooms, and return their keys by the designated time. Please see Returning Keys regarding where and how to return your residence keys. More information about the move-out process can be found here.

Graduating residential students holding Private Mailboxes (PMBs) must go to the Mail & Copy Center at Rothwell Center to terminate their PMB rental and/or elect another mail service option. The Mail & Copy Center provides a mail forwarding service at a cost of $25.00 per month, plus a deposit for postage and packing materials. Under this service, mail will be forwarded to another address twice a month. The Mail & Copy Center will forward mail for a maximum of six months. Please go to the Mail & Copy Center and complete a Re-Mail Form. PMB holders that are not returning to Mills must select "permanent" rather than "temporary" forwarding on the form.

Mail for PMB holders that have not terminated their PMB rental or elected another mail service option, will be returned as undeliverable.

Returning Keys

You must return any Mills College keys in your possession in order to clear your student account. Please carefully read the key return instructions below. Do not leave keys at the front Gate House, in your room, or anywhere other than the locations indicated below!

If you are doing a move-out walk-through with your RA or House Manager you may be given the opportunity to return your residential key(s) at the end of the walk-through and be given a receipt. If you opt to do Express Check-Out you will return your key to the HMDS Office or in the HMDS Key Drop-Off Box, after taping an Express Check-Out Card to your door. Please see here for details on the move-out process.

Non-residential keys, and residential keys not returned during a move-out walk-through, should be returned to the HMDS Office in Sage Hall 138 so that you can obtain a receipt. If you need to return keys while the HMDS office is closed (at any other time than between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday), please get a key envelope from your RA, your House Manager, or the HMDS Office. Write your name, your Mills ID number, and a list of the enclosed keys on the envelope, seal the envelope securely, and drop it, with your keys enclosed, into the HMDS Key Drop-off Box.

The drop box is located outside of Sage Hall at the left-hand entrance to the building.

Important: Fines for keys not returned will be charged to your student account and you will be billed. Your account will be placed on hold and you will not be able to obtain transcripts until your account is paid in full and/or the keys are returned. If lock changes are performed additional charges will be assessed; all charges for keys to locks that have been changed are non-reversible, as are charges for keys not returned within 12 months of the key return deadline.
