Description

Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Located on 135 lush acres in the foothills of Oakland, California, the College enrolls approximately 950 undergraduate women and 500 graduate women and men. The Assistant Director of Human Resources is working at a college-wide level and providing consultation to department heads regarding employment and performance issues. Your broad HR experience will serve you well as you build relationships with employees and drive processes. You will wear multiple hats and juggle multiple projects. While it should be understood that there will be a certain amount of clerical and administrative work, this is a key role in our small HR team and you will be encouraged to expand your skills and grow. This position reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Classification and Compensation

  • Lead the efforts of revising the classification / compensation structure.
  • Work with department heads to classify and reclassify staff positions
  • Participate in wage and compensation studies and conduct internal compensation analysis
  • Review for parity and equity within college pay structures.
  • Support compensation initiatives as needed, including: job analysis, design and documentation, job benchmarking and job classification and ranking procedures

Compliance

  • Maintain thorough understanding and knowledge of employment laws; ensure compliance in all aspects of the employment relationship.
  • Assess, develop, implement, monitor and revise HR policies, procedures and systems.
  • Ensure filing of proper federal, state and local legally required documents in your area.
  • Interpret policies

Recruitment and Hiring

  • Oversee recruitment process including training, monitoring and development of hiring practices
  • Consult with departments regarding recruiting efforts and help each develop a solid recruitment plan that takes into consideration postings to find the highest quality candidates and expand the diversity of the applicant pool.

Performance Management and Employee Relations

  • Resolve employee relations issues, provide management counseling and exit interviewing for personnel.
  • Assist managers in developing and retaining high performance employees and teams.
  • Enhance the operation of the internal training and development programs throughout the college.
  • Oversee and assist in the annual performance review process.
  • Oversee corrective action process.
  • Proactively support change management initiatives

Generalist Responsibilities

  • Ensure thorough and effective planning, communications, execution, and follow-up throughout the organization on key initiatives
  • Act as a coach and advisor to managers
  • Complete timely and effective investigation of complaints and recommend appropriate action.
  • Perform related duties as needed.
Minimum Requirements
  • Solid experience managing HRIS systems and an understanding of Position Control
  • Willingness to do administrative tasks on a regular basis
  • Exceptional written, oral, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment
  • Demonstrate strong initiative, follow-through, and sense of urgency
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong team philosophy; proven ability to work positively, collaboratively and professionally within a team and across an organization.
  • Proven intermediate-level skills in Microsoft Outlook and Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Flexible and willing to step-up and step-in when there is an opportunity to make things better.
  • Ability to exhibit strong customer service orientation for all levels of College constituencies and members of the public
  • Ability to take appropriate steps to promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Ability to work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness Prevention Plan.
Salary

Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b retirement plan, 22 days vacation plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff also receives free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
