Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Located on 135 lush acres in the foothills of Oakland, California, the College enrolls approximately 950 undergraduate women and 500 graduate women and men. The College is establishing a new position, Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life, to complement the existing position of Assistant Dean of Students, Student Services.

Leadership
Responsibilities: The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life is a critical member of the Student Life Leadership Team. This position is newly created and will play a primary role in supporting the Dean of Students and Vice Provost in both the day-to-day functions and in the broader visioning for the Division of Student Life. The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will build an exceptional Community Life Unit grounded in the mission and vision of the Division of Student Life and Mills College. The overall charge of the Assistant Dean is to significantly improve the retention and graduation rates of our students through intentional, student-centered co-curricular programs and services that foster life-long learning.

The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will model engagement with the Mills Community as Mills moves toward becoming a fully 24-7 campus. The Assistant Dean is expected to create evening and weekend opportunities for our students, and when appropriate, for Community Life staff and the Assistant Dean to coordinate and participate in these events.

Student Support
The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will provide direct student support in various ways, sharing responsibility with the Dean of Students/Vice Provost and the Leadership Team in developing a comprehensive Student Development Model for all Mills students, paying particular attention to affinity populations. The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life must be well versed on intersectionaility in terms of race, class, gender identity, sexuality, religion, national origin, disability, etc.

The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will work closely with the Assistant Dean, Student Services to ensure that the programs and services offered by each unit are complementary, and systematically collaborative in terms of both human and financial resources.

Representative Duties

The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life has a dynamic and diverse portfolio and it is a new an evolving position. As the Senior Community Life administrator for both undergraduate and graduate students at Mills, the Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life is charged with providing overall leadership to and management of programs and activities that complement the mission of the Division of Student Life and the College as well as supporting students' overall personal and educational development. There are a number of things that may not be listed or that may have to be shifted over time. Time management, strategic planning and appropriate delegation will be critical for success in this role.

Among a host of responsibilities, the Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will oversee the management of the Residential Life Program, Student Activities, Student Diversity Programs and student governance. The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will chair, co-chair or serve in various roles on staff and/or student committees; serve as the Senior Conduct Officer for the College therefore serving as the keeper of the process in terms of implementation and education; manage and participate in collaboration with the Assistant Dean, Student Services, in the on-call system for the Division; provide counsel to students with concerns; maintain fiscal responsibility and accountability; oversee and identify assessment and measurement outcomes for the programs and services offered by the Community Life Unit and the Division of Student Life; stay current on student development best practices; and, research and use findings to guide the work of Community Life and the Division.

Reporting to the Dean of Students and Vice Provost, the Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will serve as a member of the Division of Student Life's Leadership Team for continuing improvement of the learning environment. In addition, the Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will also provide stewardship of Community Life resources by developing annual operating budgets, leading all areas of Community Life, and supervising staff.

Requirements Ideal candidates should have a record of progressively responsible experience in the management of student affairs and an unwavering commitment to women's education. The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life will be a strategic thinker and builder with a strong knowledge of the student affairs profession and a strong commitment to the special role it plays in a liberal arts college environment. The successful candidate will combine strategic visioning capacity with practical and pragmatic functional knowledge of high-performing student life enterprises. In addition, the candidate should have the ability to work in a student-centered campus environment, a demonstrated commitment to and understanding of diversity and social justice, and excellent oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have an unwavering commitment to women's education and to the advancement of women in society and demonstrated expertise in student development, event planning and management is expected. The candidate must demonstrate expertise in customer service orientation for all levels of College constituencies and members of the public. The Assistant Dean of Students, Community Life candidate must show the ability to work safely in compliance with College Injury and Illness Prevention.

Preferred candidates should have at least seven years of progressive experience in the field of higher education or student affairs and hold a minimum of a master's degree (doctorate preferred) in counseling, student development, higher education administration, or a related field.

Salary

Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b retirement plan, 22 days vacation plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff also receives free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
