Job Title Public Safety Officer,  Full-time, Non-Exempt
Reports To Director of Public Safety
Description Mills College is a nationally respected independent liberal arts college for women with graduate programs for both women and men. Mills College is recruiting for the position of Public Safety Officer.

Representative Duties

The Public Safety Officer may perform duties in any of the following areas:

  • Field Patrol: Patrol campus grounds by vehicle, bicycle and foot to prevent criminal incidents; protect life and property through enforcement of laws, ordinances and College polices; respond to emergency situations on campus and decide if additional outside emergency personnel (city police, fire, paramedics) are needed. Investigate criminal incidents on campus and complete written reports of the incidents. Monitor/assist with campus traffic and parking. Issue citations for illegally parked vehicles. Respond to questions and complaints. Handle campus building security including lock-up and alarms; assist with campus safety hazard identification. Monitor criminal activity in the area surrounding the campus. Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Front Gate: Staff the front gate house; answer incoming calls to Public Safety; coordinate radio system communications with field patrol; monitor foot, bike and vehicle traffic onto campus through the front gate. Serve as an informational resource to campus community and visitors; contact outside personnel in emergency situations. Complete written communication log on a daily basis. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must be well-organized and dependable. Able to perform multiple tasks. Have good written and oral communication, problem-solving and public safety skills. Have a strong customer service orientation and excellent judgment. Able to work effectively in a diverse and multicultural environment. Able to work safely and comply with the College's Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Work experience in an academic setting and training in campus safety are preferred. Must be available for all shifts. Have valid California driver's license and good driving record. Must pass drug test, background investigation, including finger-printing and pre-employment physical. Possess a current California Guard Card, or have ability to obtain one. High school graduate or equivalent, some college preferred. Ability to pass advanced campus security classes. Former Police, Sheriff, Fire Department employees or EMTs strongly encouraged to apply.

Salary

Above industry standard, commensurate with experience, plus an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403(b) retirement plan, 10 days vacation the first year plus 13 paid holidays and 12 sick days annually. Staff members also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period.
