The College is recruiting for a Journey Level Stationary Engineer.
Representative Duties
The Stationary Engineer's primary responsibilities include the following:
- Performs journey-level mechanical work in repair, inspection, servicing and alteration of College heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning systems and related equipment and facilities.
- Conducts daily boiler inspections and make repairs to related systems; assures proper equipment operation.
- Locates and acquires parts necessary for repair or maintenance.
- Performs maintenance and repair to related electrical and mechanical controls and piping systems; diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems; repairs or replaces defective parts in units and equipment and controls.
- Maintains and repairs air fan units.
- Checks and replaces generators and other equipment; cleans and adjusts pilots; repairs pipes and changes filters as necessary; inspects belts.
- Tests water samples and adjusts chemical feeding equipment for proper water treatment; operates back flow equipment as necessary.
- Operates a variety of tools and power equipment including electrical, plumbing and related equipment.
- Performs work related to preventative maintenance program.
- Rebuilds pressure and temperature safety valves and water pumps as necessary.
- Performs brazing, soldering, and welding as necessary.
- Participates as part of the Facilities Maintenance Team at Mills College.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

| Requirements |
- At least five years of training and experience which demonstrate journey-level skill as a Stationary Engineer.
- Experience in all phases of electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, water treatment and boiler systems, including motors, fans, pumps, compressors and related components.
- Knowledge of: Manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trade. Boiler and fired pressure vessel safety procedures. Welding and soldering techniques. Methods and use of test equipment. Operation, repair and maintenance procedures for boiler pumps, steam traps, controls and related heating equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Strong customer service orientation.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse and multicultural environment.
- Ability to work safely and comply with the College's Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
- Must have a valid California driver's license and a good driving record.
- Must be a member of or join the International Union of Stationary Engineers, Local 39.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
- Must pass a pre-employment background check.
- Working knowledge of Delta Controls system highly desirable.

| Salary |
Union scale per collective bargaining agreement, plus an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance/403b retirement plan, 10 days vacation the first year, 13 paid holidays, and 12 sick days annually. Staff also receives free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period. |
