AAMC 2010 Tours

The Travel Committee of the Alumnae Association of Mills College plans several exciting trips each year, featuring a wide range of opportunities, interests, and learning in a variety of formats. Proceeds from these travel programs benefit the AAMC. 

These trips have been chosen for their quality and value realized through group travel. The camaraderie of alumnae travel enhances scenic visits and educational opportunities. Space is generally limited per our allotments. We urge a timely registration in order not to be disappointed.


Greek Isles: Athens, Crete, and Santorini
Discover the history, beauty and culture of three distinct locales in Greece and experience the incredible diversity and undeniable magic of the Greek Isles. The past will come to life as you explore the incredible art and architecture of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Rethymnon, the Minoan Palace of Knossos (where mythical King Minos ruled his kingdom), and history-rich Chania, then end with a cruise on the Sea of Crete.

The Flavors of Burgundy and Provence
After a two-day stay in Paris, board a riverboat in Chalon-sur-Saone to cruise to Arles. Spend time sightseeing in Tournun/Tain L'Hermitage, Viviers, and Avignon. The journey will end with an exciting evening excursion to Monte Carlo.

The Canadian Maritimes
Stroll down the history-lined streets of charming fishing villages, bustling ports, and cosmopolitan cities. Learn of the unique cultures that thrive in the Canadian Maritimes: the First Nations people, French Acadians, the Scots, and the Irish. Take a lesson on catching, cooking, and cracking lobster; visit the "Anne of Green Gables" house; and  learn about good clean fun at the Olivier Soapery.

Scotland (Oban and Stirling)
Visit enchanting villages and fortresses on Scotland's west coast. Then, on the east coast, steep yourself in the history of William Wallace and Braveheart, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf.

Bavaria and Oberammergau's Passion Play
Repeated every 10 years since 1700, the entire town reenacts the Passion of Christ play to fulfill a pledge after the town was spared from plague. In 2010, the village will perform the play for the 41st time. Take the fabled romantic road from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Lake Constance ending in cosmopolitan Munich. You will be surrounded by a fairy-tale land of half-timbered houses, magnificent cathedrals, and Gothic town halls.

Copper Canyon, hiking in the Urique Canyon
Begin a journey rich in history, natural wonders, and fascinating culture at the colonial town of El Fuerte before boarding the famous Copper Canyon train that takes you on one of the most spectacular train rides in the Americas. Then, an experienced burro crew guides you on a two-day descent into the Urique canyon, passing the dwellings and fields of the indigenous Tarahumara Indians. Unique plant life and abundant birdwatching opportunities enrich your trek through several different habitats, and three nights of camping provide plenty of opportunity for hiking, swimming, and relaxing. Due to the physical demands and high altitudes of this trip, travelers should be in good physical condition. See more details in the brochure.

South Africa
This trip is an introduction to the spectacular bological diversity and fascinating culture of South Africa. Begin in Cape Town, see its backdrop of the Table Mountains, and travel to Robben Island along the Cape Peninsula. Enjoy a three-day ride on the famous Rovos Rail to Johannesburg to experience the sense of community which unites Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. Included is a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve.

Holiday Markets Cruise on the Rhine/Main Rivers
On this trip, envelop yourself in the spirit of the holidays at Germany’s festive Christmas markets. Spend seven nights onboard the first-class MS Amadeus Diamond. Take a walking tour of Cologne and its cathedral. Discover Koblenz, a charming town at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Stroll through lovely Heidelberg and visit its landmark castle and later listen to joyous carols sung by a children’s choir in Aschaffenburg. Wander through historic Wertheim and admire the opulence of the Residenz in Würzburg before enjoying a wine tasting at one of the city's historic cellars. Observe Bamberg’s Baroque architecture, ending with a journey to historic Nuremberg, before heading back home.
