In 1999, the Mills College swimming team swam its way into the new millennium with the grand opening of the state of the art Trefethen Aquatic Center. Mills student-athletes now have the chance to be a part of a supportive and challenging intercollegiate swimming team. The team allows for a variety of individual swimming abilities yet strives for a common goal: to do one's best in both the classroom and the pool.
The Mills College swimming team has seen a range of abilities, from an NAIA National Qualifier to many first time competitive swimmers, and every ability in between. Mills swimmers have been growing and improving with every stroke.
The academic achievement of Cyclone swimmers illustrates the department's commitment to academic excellence and the student in student-athlete. In both the 2001-02 and 2002-03 school years the Cyclone swimming team had the highest team grade point average among the sports teams at Mills.
The swimming season runs from September through February. Practices are five days a week and include a variety of dry-land, weight training, and swimming activities. A typical season involves approximately eight competitions and has included the NAIA National Championships, a televised invitational, dual and tri meets, as well as invitationals with other NAIA and NCAA teams. In recent years, the team has traveled to Hawaii, Canada, and Oregon as well as throughout the state of California for swimming competitions or training trips.
The team trains in the beautiful 10-lane Trefethen Aquatic Center where we also host the annual Bay Area Invitational Swim Meet each year. This spectacular facility has hosted high school, masters, club, and USA swimming competitions, the 2000 Synchronized Swimming Age Group National Championships, and water polo competitions.
The Mills College swimming team is proud to make a difference in the Bay Area Community. The team annually volunteers at and participates in the Women's Cancer Resource Center's Swim-A-Mile for women with cancer. The team also hosts stroke technique clinics for the event.
We welcome dedicated student-athletes who are interested in having swimming be a part of their college experience. In our pool, it is all about attitude and effort!
