Oakland weather is generally mild, but warmer and sunnier than San Francisco.  Due to the many microclimates in the San Francisco Bay area, there can be as much as a twenty-degree difference in temperature between San Francisco and Oakland, even though the cities are only eight miles apart.

Oakland temperatures in the spring and summer range from 55 to 75 degrees, while winter temperatures are normally between 55 and 65 degrees.  Between the months of November and April, rain is common.  From May to October, there are rarely rain showers.  Sunny days are common even in the winter, but evenings are cool year-round.  January is the coldest and rainiest month in Oakland, with the average temperature at 49 degrees.

While temperatures are not extreme, they can vary over the course of a day.  Come prepared for the weather by dressing in layers, and bring a rain jacket and umbrella if you are visiting during the winter.
