Rowing's Lightweight Four Named Cyclones of the Week
Sometimes the best performances come not by beating the competition, but by competing against yourself.
In the last competition of the Mills Rowing season, Cyclones of the Week Caroline Tilghman, Cherise Bentosino, Jennifer Courtney, Merri Gordon, and Chavon Rosenthal showed just how competitive they could be-even though they knew that this was one race they wouldn't win. These fine athletes made up the Mills Varsity Lightweight 4 + (four rowers plus the cox'n) at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Championship held April 29 and 30th. The meet was filled with Division 1 and 2 teams, which meant faster competition than the team was used to. To add to their challenges, four out of the five athletes in the Varsity Lightweight boat were novice rowers. Despite these challenges, the five Mills rowers rose to the occasion with flying colors. They raced their best race of the season with a time of 9:15, even though they were trailing the other crews.
Coach Wendy Franklin-Willis attributes the boat's success to their dedication, perseverance, hard work and positive attitude throughout the season. "They raced a tremendous race with heart, power, and speed to end with a strong sprint at the finish," said Franklin-Willis. Great finish, Lightweights, and congratulations on another fantastic season!
