Diversity and Social Justice at Mills

Gender Identity and Expression Subcommittee

The Gender Identity and Expression Subcommittee of the Diversity and Social Justice Committee exists to promote dialog about issues of gender identity and expression and to promote best practices with regard to the inclusion of transgender and gender-fluid students, alumnae/i, faculty and staff. We understand the concepts of gender diversity and fluidity as pointers to the multiple pathways that individuals pursue in relation to their gender identity and expression. We recognize that "woman" is not a fixed or rigid identity and that students, staff and faculty may enter into and out of this identity prior to, during and beyond their time at Mills. We aim to promote the use of language, practices and policies that recognize the complex relationship that many individuals have with the category of "woman," while honoring our commitment to Mills' history and identity as a women's college committed to challenging gender injustice in all forms.

The Committee is composed of members appointed by the President of Mills College. Committee membership includes not only faculty and staff members, but also appointed alumnae/i and student representatives.
