Brian Caraway / Artist Statement

Pure stoke.  For me there is pure joy to be found in a quiet exactness of line within a composition.  My aim is to make paintings that create a sensational visual reaction with color and line.  Playing with the subtleties of perception, I am attracted by rhythms in pattern and design.

It is the confluence of systems that I find the most magical. Beginning with a fairly simple layout, slight-of-hand variations provide the possibility for exploration within any given system of marks. Close approximations of precision signify a hand made quality.

These paintings come from, and hopefully allude to, a certain state of mind.  Kind of like staring through a chain link fence and loosing one’s sense of depth in your field of vision.   With the use of color and line I attempt to create a dance between the eye and the brain.  I am not afraid of red, yellow, and blue.
