Dear Members of the Mills Community,

It is with great pleasure that I write to inform you that the Mills College Board of Trustees has elected the 13th president in the College's 159-year history. Alecia A. DeCoudreaux, an accomplished business leader and current chair of the Wellesley College Board of Trustees, will begin her tenure as the next president of Mills College on July 1, 2011.

Ms. DeCoudreaux currently serves as vice president and deputy general counsel at Eli Lilly and Company, where she has worked for three decades. She has also served as executive director of Lilly Research Laboratories, research planning and scientific administration, and has directed governmental and community relations for the company.

In addition to her impressive business and legal career, Alecia DeCoudreaux has held numerous leadership and fundraising positions in academic, private, and community sectors, including director of the Indiana University Foundation and as a member of the Indiana University School of Law Board of Visitors.

After a comprehensive national search, Ms. DeCoudreaux was selected from an impressive group of candidates representing a diversity of backgrounds and accomplishments. You will also find detailed biographical information and a video interview in which Ms. DeCoudreaux discusses her path and her hopes for the Mills presidency and the value she places on education. A proud alumna of Wellesley College, Alecia DeCoudreaux embodies our core values of leadership, creativity, and social responsibility. Throughout her professional career and her community involvement, she has demonstrated a commitment to women's education, civic engagement, philanthropy, and volunteerism.

We invite you to meet our next president at 3:00 pm today in the Littlefield Concert Hall as we welcome her to the Mills community. A reception will follow in the lobby. For those unable to attend, we will be offering a live webcast at so that you can be part of this historic moment in the College's history. Please be assured that this will be the first of many opportunities for you to meet and engage with President-elect DeCoudreaux this year.

I wish to thank the Presidential Search Committee, led by Wendy Hull Brody '68, for the incredible work they undertook on behalf of Mills College. This 15-person team of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumnae worked collaboratively, thoughtfully, and diligently to find an individual who could advance Mills to the next level of success. A special thank you to Renée Jadushlever for staffing the committee and for her good guidance and formidable work on behalf of the College.

I also wish to thank current President Janet L. Holmgren for her legacy of success over the last 20 years, giving us the foundation on which to build a strong future. We will be working with her to prepare for a smooth transition in the months ahead.
