TWO MILLS COLLEGE ALUMNAE NAMED FULBRIGHT SCHOLARS

Oakland, CA - Mills College is proud to announce that two recent graduates have been selected to receive prestigious Fulbright awards for 2005-06. They are:

Sarah K. Lee, Class of 2000 - Major in Economic Analysis - She will travel to Taiwan to serve as a teaching assistant in English as a Foreign Language. Lee described her career plans in her research proposal for the Fulbright award: “I plan to pursue a doctorate in comparative education with an emphasis on the economics of education in China. My goal is to begin this research by learning about the distribution of education funding in Taiwan through interviews with principals and teachers in addition to the primary charge of the Fulbright Teaching Assistantship. I see this opportunity as a doorway into further exploration of China's education policies and the role of private entities in the education space. “

Alicia Shook, Class of 2004 - Major in Creative Writing and Ethnic Studies - She will be enrolled in graduate studies in the Southeast Asian Studies Program at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. In her research proposal, Shook wrote “As a student in the master's degree program, I will be able to take courses that facilitate a critical perspective of the history of colonialism in Southeast Asia, gender inequalities in Thai society, and cross-border migrations within Southeast Asia. I anticipate that the more traditional study I will undertake at Chulalongkorn - in combination with my work with HIV positive individuals in Thailand - will provide the foundation of my research at the doctoral level, which I plan to pursue when I return to the U.S. I hope to make a professional career in exploring the problem of global disparities in healthcare with a focus on HIV/AIDS.”

The Fulbright Scholars Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The Program is the U.S. government’s flagship academic exchange effort administered by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
