FORMER CONGRESSMAN RON DELLUMS TO SPEAK AT MILLS COLLEGE'S 117th COMMENCEMENT ON SATURDAY, MAY 14th 2005
Oakland, CA - Former California Congressman Ron Dellums will be the commencement speaker at Mills College on Saturday, May 14, 2005. For nearly 30 years, Dellums represented Oakland’s Ninth District where Mills is located. At the ceremony, he will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree in recognition of his lifelong work for peace, justice, and equality. Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA, Ninth District), an alumna of Mills, will provide an introduction of Dellums.
This year’s graduating class at Mills includes 201 undergraduate women and 246 graduate women and men. The College’s graduation event begins at 9:45 am on the campus in Toyon Meadow.
“Ron Dellums is a heroic civic and political leader who has fought valiantly for humane causes throughout his life,” said Mills President Janet L. Holmgren. “Mills honors him for his unwavering integrity and a lifelong commitment to social responsibility, including making significant contributions to ending U.S. support for apartheid in South Africa.”
According to Congresswoman Lee, “Ron Dellums is the father of modern progressive politics and I learned so much from his example. I am proud that my alma mater is recognizing his leadership and service, because his vision and voice are more relevant than ever in these troubled times.”
Dellums is the founder and senior partner of Dellums and Associates L.L.C. global management consulting firm. First elected to the House of Representatives in 1970, against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, he became one of the leading Congressional voices for peace and disarmament. His legislative initiatives spanned the fields of civil rights, environmental protection, international security, and affirmative action.
