MILLS COLLEGE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

Oakland, CA - Megan Miller, a student-athlete at Mills College, has received the national Coca-Cola Community All-American Award in recognition of her outstanding community service. She was selected from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division.

Recently announced by the Coca-Cola Company and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the honor recognizes, celebrates, and applauds student-athletes who are making a difference in their communities.

In addition to presenting Ms. Miller with her award at NACDA’s 40th Anniversary Convention, Coca-Cola will make a donation of $5,000 to the Milo Foundation, a non-profit animal sanctuary in Willits, CA.

“This honor brings awareness to the power and importance of community service,” said Ms. Miller.  “Mills strongly encourages students to become involved in their communities, and provides excellent opportunities to work on campus with groups such as Upward Bound and Expanding Your Horizons math and science conference for girls.”

A computer science major with a 3.84 grade point average, Ms. Miller is captain of Mills’ volleyball team.  She volunteered as a volleyball coach for local middle school children, as an instructor for girls participating in Expanding Your Horizons, and for the Luna Film Festival benefit for women with breast cancer.

Ms. Miller has written, and was awarded grants to fund programs promoting diversity and student-athletes for the Mills Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation Department.

Honored with the Mills Student-Athlete Service Award (2003-04), she is also a four-year recipient of the Sportsmanship Award.

Coca-Cola selected one All-American winner in six categories: NCAA Division I-A, Division I-AA/I-AAA, Division II, Division III, NAIA, and Junior/Community College.
