MILLS COLLEGE ALUMNA ALICIA SHOOK RECEIVES FULBRIGHT AWARD

Oakland, CA - Mills College alumna Alicia Shook has received a Fulbright Grant to pursue master’s degree studies at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. She graduated from Mills in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and ethnic studies.

Shook will enroll in Chulalongkorn’s Southeast Asian Studies Program where she intends to study the history of colonialism and cross-border migrations in Southeast Asia, as well as gender inequities in Thai society.  She also plans to work with HIV positive people in Thailand.  Shook’s future goal is to use these academic and healthcare experiences as a foundation for future doctoral research in the U.S., and to pursue a career exploring the global disparities in healthcare.

Fulbright awards are based on academic or professional achievement and demonstrated leadership in recipients’ fields.  The flagship U.S. international educational exchange program, the Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
