AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR ORVILLE SCHELL COMING TO MILLS COLLEGE TO DISCUSS "REINVENTING CULTURE IN POST-REVOLUTIONARY CHINA"
Oakland, CA - Mills College will present a lecture by award-winning author Orville Schell on “Reinventing Culture in Post-Revolutionary China,” Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. Free and open to the public, this event was made possible by the Nancy T. Lin Li and Amy T. Lin Shen Fund for Cultural Understanding.
The event will take place in the Danforth Lecture Hall followed by a reception in the Mills College Art Museum.
Schell will discuss the myriad ways that art, music, film, literature, and theater are developing, as China seeks to evolve away from the culture of Mao’s revolution.
Schell is the dean of the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Having devoted much of his career to reporting and writing on Asia, he is the author of 14 books including Virtual Tibet: Searching for Shangri-La from the Himalayas to Hollywood, Mandate of Heaven, and Discos and Democracy. He is also the recipient of numerous awards including the Overseas Press Club Award for best foreign story, and the Harvard/Stanford Shorenstein Award for reporting on Asia.
Schell frequently serves as a network television commentator and is a consultant for the PBS “Frontline” documentaries. He is also a board member of Human Rights Watch and the Social Science Research Council.
