MILLS ENGLISH PROFESSOR JULIANA SPAHR WINS ACLS FELLOWSHIP

Oakland, CA - Juliana Spahr, associate professor of English at Mills College, has won a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) to study “The Crisis of Language in 20th Century Literature.”

This year, ACLS awarded fellowships totaling nearly $4.8 million to 139 American scholars from 102 institutions.

During her fellowship year, Spahr will work on a scholarly study that spans from the avant garde at the beginning of the 20th century to the multicultural/multilingual writing at the end of the century. Her study will examine the influence of language politics and colonialism on 20th century literature.

Spahr is the author of /This Connection of Everyone with Lungs/ (U of California, 2005), Everybody’s Autonomy: Connective Reading and Collective Identity (U of Alabama, 2001), and Fuck You-Aloha-I Love You (Wesleyan 2001).

The preeminent representative of humanities scholarship in America, the American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship Program funds humanities research to permit scholars holding the PhD or equivalent to devote a year to research and writing. During the past 60 years, more than 3,000 scholars have held ACLS fellowships
