MILLS PRESIDENT HOLMGREN HONORED BY CARNEGIE FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING

Oakland, CA - Mills College President Janet L. Holmgren was recently honored for her visionary leadership as the outgoing chair of the Board of Trustees for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Specifically commended for her astute stewardship of the Foundation and her expertise in higher education, teacher education, and policy, she was honored in November at a reception and dinner with Board members and invited guests at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The President of Mills since 1991, Holmgren has served on the Carnegie Board of Trustees for seven years, and as chair since 2001. As chair, she shepherded the 100-year-old Foundation through the approval and construction of its first permanent home in Stanford, California.

“Janet Holmgren is a gifted educational and organizational leader,” said Carnegie President Lee S. Shulman. “Her tenure as chair was characterized by a profound sense of stewardship and responsibility for the Foundation’s welfare, and an unremitting dedication to good colleagueship. It has been a pleasure to work with her, and I look forward to continued close collaboration for many years to come.” Holmgren will continue on the Board as a trustee and past chair.

In recognition of her service, the Board passed a special commendation, noting that Holmgren has been actively and genuinely interested in both the program and the management of the Foundation. The recognition continued: “Her expert knowledge of the pressing issues in higher education, policy, and teacher education have made her an invaluable counsel to Foundation staff, and the Foundation is grateful to continue to benefit from her membership on the Board and her role as past chair in the years to come.”

The new chair of the Carnegie Board is the Honorable David S. Tatel, a circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1905 and chartered in 1906 by an act of Congress, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is an independent policy and research center with a primary mission “to do and perform all things necessary to encourage, uphold, and dignify the profession of the teacher and the cause of higher education.” The improvement of teaching and learning is central to all of the work of the Foundation. The Carnegie Foundation is governed by an independent, national Board of Trustees and uses income from its endowment to support its research and publication activities.
