“Swim-a-Mile for Women with Cancer” Fundraiser Honored Oakland, CA - Mills College has received an “Award of Merit” by the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) for its “Swim-a-Mile for Women with Cancer” 2005 event. Mills One of Only Five California Colleges Rated in Intel’s 2005 Survey Oakland, CA - Mills College has been ranked among the top 50 U.S. colleges and universities for outstanding campus access to a wireless network. One of only five California colleges rated by Intel, Mills was recognized based on the percentage its campus is covered by wireless technology, the number of undergraduates, and the computer-to-student ratio. The study examined schools with more than 1,000 students. This year, 74 percent of the top 50 schools have 100 percent wireless coverage on campus compared with only 14 percent in last year’s survey. STATEWIDE EDUCATION SUMMIT AT MILLS COLLEGE FEATURED IN OAKLAND TRIBUNE California's Top Educational Leaders Meet, Propose Key Recommendations from Master Plan Oakland, CA - California's top leaders in education participated in a major summit at Mills College on Tuesday, December 6, 2005, to reinvigorate the key recommendations from the California Education Master Plan. Approximately 30 officials and educators worked together throughout the day on reform measures for the State's schools, from pre-kindergarten through higher education. Among those attending the summit were Jack O'Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Alan Bersin, governor-appointed State Secretary of Education. Instrumental in organizing the event were Delaine Eastin, Mills Distinguished Visiting Professor of Educational Leadership and former State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Dede Alpert, former State Senator (D-San Diego).

Everyday, history is made by people whose names remain unknown as well as those who become eternal icons. In May of 1980, a woman who forever changed our country spent a week in our home. The East Bay Area Friends of Highlander Research and Education Center joined with founder Myles Horton to honor two of the Civil Rights Movements most courageous pioneers: Rosa Parks and Septima Clark. Clark broke ground as a pioneering force in citizenship training and voter education. The two women met at Highlander in 1955, a place where my own mother-in-law Margaret Landes was trained during the 1930s. November 04, 2005 Read the full story

Yiyun Li Wins for Debut Short Stories: A Thousand Years of Good Prayers Oakland, CA - Yiyun Li, assistant professor of English at Mills College, has received the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, the largest short story prize in the world. The award of 50,000 euros (approximately $60,385) was given to Li for her debut collection of short stories, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers (Random House, September 2005). Rita Stuckey Earns Doctoral Degree, Creates Successful Program to Protect Seniors Oakland, CA - A registered nurse for 21 years and the former interim director of a local nursing home, Rita Stuckey witnessed serious physical and sexual abuse of seniors by paid staff, and vowed to do something about it. Last month, she graduated from Mills with her doctorate in educational leadership, having completed a dissertation on institutional elder abuse, and she created the Care Advocate Program to curtail the incidence of abuse.
