MILLS COLLEGE PROFESSOR CARLOTA CAULFIELD PUBLISHES LYRICAL AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL COLLECTION

Oakland, CA - Carlota Caulfield, professor of Spanish and Spanish-American Studies at Mills College, has published Ticket to Ride (Some Ways to Play My Tunes), an innovative collection of autobiographical essays, poems, and interviews.

Available in Spanish and English (InteliBooks), Ticket to Ride reflects Caulfield’s Cuban-Irish-Catalan-Sephardic heritage, in the book described as a “disparate genealogy manifest in a moving, changing poetic geography (Lydia Gil, Sun-Sentinel, 11/05).  Gil continues, “Ticket to Ride is a lyrical tribute to, and eloquent demonstration of (Caulfield’s) multiculturalism as a writer and as a human being.”

The recipient of the first Hispanic American International Poetry Prize, “Dulce Maria Loynaz,” Caulfield is known for her erudite, multifaceted writing, and has written nine poetry collections.  She has received numerous writing awards, such as: the Italian International Poetry Prize “Ultimo Novecento” (1988); the Honorary Mention in the Poetry Latino Literature Prize, Latin American Institute (New York, 1997); Premio Internazionale “Riccardo Marchi-Torre di Calafuria (Italy, 1995); and Mención de Honor in the “Federico García Lorca Poetry Prize” (U.S.-Spain, 1994).

Caulfield has earned the following degrees: Licenciatura, history and philosophy, University of Havana; MA, Spanish and Latin American literature, San Francisco State University; and PhD, philosophy and letters, Tulane University. She was born in Havana, Cuba, and has also lived in Dublin, Zurich, New York, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Caulfield has taught at Mills since 1992.
