MILLS COLLEGE BREAKS SCHOOL RECORDS AT 2006 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS Oakland, CA - Mills College broke 12 school records at the 25th National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) 2006 National Swimming and Diving Championships. The event was held March 2–4, 2006 in St. Louis, MO. Swimmers Shayna Elbling, Chrissy Fisher, Erin Lucas, Catherine Stitt, and Sophia Tuttle comprise the largest team in the history of Mills College to qualify for the national championships. NAIA Championship Results Team Events Individual Events Leading off relays official splits: Overall, Mills swimmers finished 15th nationally in the NAIA. Mills head coach Neil Virtue and assistant coach Bridget Mansell also reported that the Mills Swimming Team was selected by the NAIA Swim Coaches Association Officers to receive the first NAIA/Buffalo Funds “Five Star Champions of Character” award. The award recognizes the Mills team for demonstrating the NAIA five core character values of respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship. Sophomore Chrissy Fisher also received the “Champion of Character” award for her contributions to the Mills team. This was the first time in Mills history that the College’s swimmers advanced to the final rounds. All national qualifiers swim in the preliminary heats in the morning, and the top 12 qualify for the finals in the evening. Preliminary finishers #1–6 make the championship final and #7–12 make the consolation final. The Mills 400-yard medley relay team qualified for the consolation final, and Chrissy Fisher qualified for the consolation final in the 100-yard breaststroke.
