THE NEW YORK TIMES NAMES MILLS AMONG 20 OUTSTANDING COLLEGES FOR STUDENTS TO CONSIDER ATTENDING

Oakland, CA - The New York Times has named Mills College one of 20 colleges nationwide that students should consider attending, based on the quality of its teaching, academic programs, and campus environment.

In an article entitled “Off the Beaten Path” by Randal C. Archibold, in the Times’ Education Life section (Sunday, July 31, 2006), Mills is one of only three California colleges noted as an excellent option among the top higher educational institutions.

Selected by a dozen higher education experts and counselors, the colleges were recognized for the quality of their undergraduate teaching and scholarship. The Times singled out Mills for a number of “firsts,” including  being the first women’s college to offer a computer science major. Mills was also recognized for its new professionally focused programs such as pre-nursing and infant mental health, and for “advancing electronic music” through the Center for Contemporary Music.

The writer pointed out that while many small liberal arts colleges discuss diversity and struggle to “broaden their net,” Mills succeeds in creating a diverse student population with one-third of the undergraduates representing minority groups.

Mills College is a nationally renowned, independent liberal arts college offering innovative degree programs for undergraduate women, and graduate degree and certificate programs for women and men. Consistently ranked among the top 75 liberal arts colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Mills is also recognized as one of the country’s 20 most diverse liberal arts colleges. The Princeton Review selected Mills as one of 11 colleges for first-time inclusion in its Best 361 Colleges in 2005. Nestled in the foothills of Oakland, California on 135 lush acres, Mills provides a dynamic liberal arts education fostering women’s leadership, social responsibility, and creativity.
