PIONEERING BROADCASTER RENEL BROOKS-MOON FEATURED SPEAKER AT MILLS COLLEGE CONVOCATION

Oakland, CA - Mills College will mark the beginning of academic year 2006–07 at Convocation on Friday, September 15, 2006 with featured speaker Renel Brooks-Moon, the voice of the San Francisco Giants and a Mills alumna from the class of 1981. The event will be held in the campus Concert Hall at 10:15 a.m. Every fall, Convocation formally celebrates the new academic year, honors student and faculty achievements with special awards, and recognizes the year’s graduating class.

Renel Brooks-Moon is a pioneer in the male-dominated field of sports broadcasting. She served as part of the “Bay to Breakers” television broadcast team and host of “A’s Inside Pitch.” Brooks-Moon has been recognized by the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame as the first female announcer of a championship game in any professional sport.

Born in Oakland, CA, Brooks-Moon serves the Bay Area through her role as vice-chair of the Friends of Faith, a non-profit organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness, education, and prevention. She serves on the board of the San Francisco Giants Communities Fund, which assists organizations and provides services for at-risk youth and underserved families. Her community work has been honored by the Bay Area Black Media Coalition, Women of Excellence, National Council of Negro Women, East Oakland Youth Development Center, the Glide Foundation, and others. March 18, 2005 was proclaimed “Renel Brooks-Moon Day” in San Francisco by Mayor Gavin Newsom who honored her for 20 years as a Bay Area media personality and community activist.

Mills College is a nationally renowned, independent liberal arts college offering innovative degree programs for undergraduate women, and graduate degree and certificate programs for women and men. Consistently ranked among the top 75 liberal arts colleges in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Mills is also recognized as one of the country’s 20 most diverse colleges. The Princeton Review selected Mills as one of only 11 new colleges included in its Best 361 Colleges2005.
