Oakland, CA - A Mills student suffered an alleged sexual assault on Thursday, December 7, 2006. The student had met the alleged perpetrator online, in response to a potential job opportunity. After the incident, the student moved quickly and courageously to notify the police and Mills public safety officials about the attack and aided in finding the alleged perpetrator, thus helping to prevent this attacker from harming others. Getty Foundation Grant Supports Presentations by Three Landscape Experts Oakland, CA - Beginning Wednesday, October 11, 2006, Mills College will present a series of three lectures on the College’s landscape heritage, supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation. Mills was recently selected by the Getty Foundation to receive a 2006 Campus Heritage grant. One of only 13 2006-Campus Heritage recipients nationwide, Mills is using the grant to fund the College’s landscape heritage master plan* documenting the campus from its 19th century origins to the present. NPR's Next Generation training project in conjunction with KALW-FM will bring seasoned journalists to Mills October 9–13, 2006, to work one-on-one with students to create a multi-part broadcast story. The Wire Music Magazine Honors Curran Oakland, CA - Alvin Curran, Milhaud Professor of Composition at Mills College, has been named a “Best Composer of 2005” by The Wire*, an international music magazine published in London. A faculty member in Mills’ highly respected Music Department since 1990, Curran published four new works in 2005: Canti Illuminati, Maritime Rites, Toto Angelica, and Inner Cities. Oscar-Nominated Actress Honored at Mills on Sunday, April 9, 2006 Oakland, CA - Oscar-nominated actress Gloria Stuart, who played Old Rose in the 1997 movie Titanic, is planning to give Mills College important printing equipment and materials including a rare typeface from her private studio in Los Angeles. A printer and book artist with art in major collections worldwide, the 95 year-old Stuart intends to donate a Vandercook Press, a rare run of Eve typeface, and archive materials as a bequest to Mills’ Book Arts program. Oakland, CA - Mills College has received a major gift of $7.4 million from the estate of Eileen Mitchell Gibbs, an alumna from the Class of 1936. A former resident of Colfax, CA, Gibbs was an avid outdoorswoman who lived her entire life in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
