MILLS HOSTS FORUM OF 100 CALIFORNIA LEADERS TO BOOST STUDENT EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT, HEALTH Chez Panisse’s Alice Waters, Agriculture Secretary A.G. Kawamura Among Experts to Meet on April 4, 2007 Oakland, CA - Alice Waters, chef/owner of Chez Panisse restaurant, Delaine Eastin, former California Superintendent of Public Instruction and now distinguished visiting professor of educational leadership at Mills, and A.G. Kawamura, secretary, California Department of Food and Agriculture, are among the leaders who will gather at Mills College for a statewide forum on “100 Leaders: the Mills Forum on Scholastic Achievement, Student Health, and School Lunch” on Wednesday, April 4, 2007. The forum will convene California leaders in education, health, agriculture, and the environment to reconsider current educational policies and programs, and recommend changes that forge a more holistic relationship between public education and public health. The event will be presented by Mills in partnership with the Center for Ecoliteracy, the UC Davis Center for Integrative Nutrition Environments in School Communities, Roots of Change Fund, and Slow Food USA. According to Eastin, ”Unless we fundamentally change how we nurture and nourish children in school, we condemn them to shortened life spans and disembodied learning. Mills is convening California leaders to envision a new direction recognizing the vital connections between the health and well-being of students and their academic achievements.” The Mills forum will unveil innovative tools and reforms affecting the learning environment. “We must implement powerful new learning strategies to enable children to learn better and improve their diet and health. And, we must also integrate these initiatives into the pedagogy of the instructional garden, kitchen classroom, cafeteria, and academic classroom,“ said Eastin.
