WASHINGTON MONTHLY COLLEGE GUIDE RANKS MILLS AMONG NATION’S TOP 50 LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGES

Oakland, CA - Mills College was recognized among the top 50 liberal arts colleges in the nation by the Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide. Ranked 49th out of 201 institutions, Mills was highly rated based on the areas of social mobility, research, and service. The Washington Monthly publishes the annual College Guide as an alternative to America’s Best Colleges published annually by U.S. News & World Report.

Mills was singled out with other top liberal arts colleges for strong tangible contributions to the public interest, including the degree to which they recruit and graduate low-income students and encourage students to serve in the Peace Corps and other service programs.

According to the Washington Monthly, “while other guides ask, ‘what can colleges do for you,’ their College Guide asks, ‘what are colleges doing for the country?’ ”The Monthly points out that their guide is “for all Americans who are concerned about our institutions of higher learning. Are our colleges making good use of our tax dollars? Are they producing graduates who can keep our nation competitive in a changing world? Are they, in short, doing well by doing good?”

Mills College is a nationally renowned, independent liberal arts college offering innovative degree programs to approximately 900 undergraduate women and 500 graduate women and men. Ranked one of the top colleges in the West by U.S. News & World Report and one of the Best 366 Colleges by The Princeton Review, Mills provides a dynamic liberal arts education fostering women's leadership, social responsibility, and creativity. Nestled in the foothills of Oakland, California, on 135 lush acres, Mills was recently selected by the New York Times as one of three outstanding California colleges for students to consider.
