Mills College Professor Translates Irish Poetry into Spanish

Oakland, CA–November 26, 2008. Carlota Caulfield, Mills College professor of Spanish and Spanish American Studies, has released No Soy Tu Musa / I'm Not Your Muse, an anthology of Irish contemporary poems.

Published by Torremozas Press of Madrid, the book is co-edited with John Goodby, an English poet, critic, and professor based at the University of Swansea, Wales. Caulfield met Goodby at the literary festival "Finnegans Awake, a Festival of Irish Writers" at Stanford University in 2000.

"I am a passionate reader of Irish literature and in particular of Irish poetry," said Caulfield. "I have always wanted to translate into Spanish the work of some of my favorite Irish women poets. I also did this collection as a way to pay homage to some of the Irish women in my family."

The bilingual collection includes Spanish translations of the works of eight leading Irish women poets: Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Eléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Sara Berkeley, Rita Anne Higgins, Paula Meehan, Eavan Boland, Medbh McGuckian and Catherine Walsh. It's the first bilingual anthology of contemporary Irish women poets published in Spain or the Hispanic World.

Since the late 1960s, Irish poetry and works from women poets have flourished as never before, said Caulfield. Their works illuminate much depth in Irish society, including Irish history, the role of Irish women, Irish mythology, and the arts and music.

Caulfield has published nine poetry collections. She teaches courses on Spanish and Latin American women writers, Hispanic poetry, Hispanic theater, and U.S.-Latino culture.
