Mills College Cross Country Team Wins National Award
Oakland, CA–December 12, 2008. The Mills College cross country team has received the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for exemplary character and sportsmanship.
Given annually at the NAIA Cross Country National Championships, one women's and one men's team are selected for fulfilling "the core character values of respect, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship."
"More than any other team I've coached, this year's team members really care about each other, and doing the best that they can do," said head coach Laura Davis.
"They hold themselves to a high standard, work hard in practice and in meets, take care of themselves outside of practice, communicate with each other and with their coaches, and look out for the good of the team. They are an inspiring, generous, strong group of women who don't just care about their team's success, but about improving the world around them."
For community service this season, the team served breakfast to the homeless in West Oakland with World Impact, a non-profit organization for underserved populations; volunteered for the See Jane Run Triathlon, a race for women to help fight breast cancer; and helped host a Girls' Sports Day as part of a Mills College athletics event, where underserved girls from Oakland public schools visited the Mills campus and learned skills in track and field, soccer, and tennis, as well as the values of respect, integrity, and support.
The team finished the season in second place, and junior Lupe Cazares qualified for the NAIA National Championships. Last season, the team finished in sixth place.
