Mills College Receives Presidential Honor for Service Oakland, CA–February 9, 2009. Mills College has been named to the 2008 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary public service for a second year in a row. "We salute Mills College for making community service a campus priority," said Stephen Goldsmith, of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which launched the Community Service Honor Roll in 2006. "We need volunteers more than ever. College students such as those at Mills represent an enormous pool of idealism and energy to help tackle some of our toughest challenges." Awardees were selected for scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation, and incentives for services. Mills College received the Honor Roll designation with 586 Mills students who logged more than 29,000 hours of community service through service learning courses and volunteer projects last year. "Mills students and staff have a long tradition of service in our community. We are proud of our extensive work," said Mills College President Janet L. Holmgren. The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federal agency that oversees programs such as Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America.
