Alecia A. DeCoudreaux Begins Presidency at Mills College

Oakland, CA–July 01, 2011 It was a milestone occasion today when, after a 20-year tenure by her predecessor, Alecia A. DeCoudreaux officially assumed her duties at Mills College, becoming the 13th president of the 159-year-old women’s college.

Formerly the vice president and deputy general counsel at Eli Lilly and Company, Ms. DeCoudreaux’s distinguished professional background includes significant corporate, academic, community, and legal experience.

“President DeCoudreaux is a role model who exemplifies Mills’ core values of leadership, social responsibility, and creativity,” said Kathleen J. Burke, chair of the Mills College Board of Trustees. “She has the talent and vision to lead us toward a successful new chapter at Mills.”

In her first official day as president, Ms. DeCoudreaux reaffirmed her commitment to the institution saying, “With a strong foundation firmly in place, I look forward to enhancing Mills’ reputation as a leader among independent liberal arts colleges and advancing its success as a strong, proud, women’s college with distinctive graduate programs for women and men.”

Since her appointment in January, DeCoudreaux has dedicated the past several months to working with the Mills College Board of Trustees and the senior administration of the College in preparation for the transition.

“I’m looking forward to being part of a very dynamic intellectual community,” said President DeCoudreaux. “My goal is to continue to build upon our excellent academic programs and to sustain the strong reputation of the College well into the future.”

The inauguration of Alecia A. DeCoudreaux is scheduled for Friday, September 23, with festivities beginning the evening before. Plans for the celebration include a fine arts open house and reception, an installation ceremony, and a topical panel discussion. Visit www.mills.edu/inauguration for details.
