Mills College Ranked in the Top 30 of Master’s Universities by Washington Monthly
Oakland, CA–August 29, 2011 The Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide issue has ranked Mills College among the top 50 master’s universities in the nation. Mills ranked 27 out of 553 total institutions, a substantially improved ranking from last year, moving Mills into the top 30 of master’s universities.
The publication rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research, and service. Along with other top master’s institutions, Mills was recognized for its noteworthy contributions to the public interest, including community service, success at undergraduates continuing on to receive PhDs, and helping low-income students earn degrees.
According to the Washington Monthly, “America’s colleges are key to the country’s greatness. They produce the research and human capital that fuel the economy.”
Editors of the Washington Monthly say, “It's a guide for all Americans who are concerned about our institutions of higher learning and poses questions that help define exactly what a public-minded institution should do.” Moreover, the Monthly distinguishes itself as a guide that, “aims to provide rankings that will encourage colleges to want to focus their resources and interest on serving the public interest,” pointing out that unlike other publications, their college rankings asks, not what can colleges do for you, but what are colleges doing for the country?”
