Professor Joseph Kahne Discusses the Impact of Digital Media on Youth Civic Participation
Oakland, CA–February 28, 2011 Director of the Mills Civic Engagement Research Group, Mills Professor Joseph Kahne has discovered some surprising findings that, contrary to conventional wisdom, kids who appear to be using games and social media strictly for entertainment, are actually building bridges and important relationships. Kahne's latest research finds that online activity can lead to greater civic engagement such as volunteerism, community problem-solving, and protest activity. Kahne's study also found that students who were required by their teachers to conduct online research on political issues, or divergent viewpoints, were much more likely to use the web in more meaningful ways during their own time.
