Lilly Ledbetter, Champion of Equal Pay for Women, to Speak at Mills College
Oakland, CA–March 21, 2012 Lilly Ledbetter, a civil rights activist who spent a decade advocating for equal pay for women, will bring her story of determination and perseverance to Mills College. When Ledbetter found out that she was earning less than her male counterparts at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant, she launched a ten-year battle that took her to the US Supreme Court and Capitol Hill.
After winning her case against her former employer, Ledbetter continued her fight when the US Supreme Court overturned the jury’s verdict. Her struggle caught the attention of then-Senator Barack Obama, who took up her cause in his campaign for President. The first piece of legislation he signed after he was elected was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. This law helps ensure that workers discriminated against on the basis of gender have a fair chance to sue their employers.
On March 29, the Mills College Public Policy Program is proud to host Ledbetter, who will share her inspirational story in Lisser Hall at 6:30 pm. Ledbetter is the author of the new book, Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond.
