Mills College Children’s School Celebrates 85 Years
The oldest laboratory school in the West has been training
educators and serving children since 1926
Oakland, CA–January 20, 2012 The Mills College Children’s School, which boasts a long, storied history of educating both teachers and children alike, is proud to celebrate its 85th anniversary.
Families, alumni, and friends of the Children’s School—the first campus-based demonstration nursery school on the West Coast and the oldest laboratory school west of the Mississippi—marked the occasion with an evening of reflection and festivity.
Recognized as a trailblazer in early childhood development, the Mills College School of Education is home to one of the only, and one of the most diverse, laboratory schools in the US.
“A leader in teacher education, the School of Education is founded on the principle of social justice and is committed to transforming the educational landscape,” said Dean Kathy Schultz. “The Children’s School provides a distinctive opportunity that not only serves the needs of children, but allows students seeking to become professional teachers to gain immediate hands-on experience in the classroom setting.”
“Since its founding in 1926, the Children’s School has maintained and enhanced its dual mission,” said Debra Brown, head of the Children’s School. “Our school is a special place where parents, children, college students, staff, and faculty come together as a community of learners. Here, the children are the teachers as much as they are the learners.”
Mills College President Alecia A. DeCoudreaux said, “It is gratifying to see that our commitment to children, to our community, and to preparing educational leaders has flourished for 85 years. We look forward to the next 85 years.”
Today, the school serves as many as 127 infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and K-5 elementary students in a spacious facility near the Mills School of Education building. Graduate and undergraduate students have the unique opportunity to use the classroom for research and study with the guidance of master teachers.
