KCBS Radio Features Mills Professor's Unique
Slant on Same-Sex Marriage Debate
Oakland, CA–March 27, 2013 After the US Supreme Court heard arguments about California’s Proposition 8, passionate observers from around the Bay Area shared commentary on the issue. Among them was Mills College Professor Ajuan Mance, who was interviewed on KCBS Radio on March 26, 2013, discussing the idea that eliminating Proposition 8 only scratches the surface of problems plaguing LGBTQ communities.
Mance, an expert on gender and race issues, addressed the idea that both Prop 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act are likely to be overturned eventually. Legalizing same-sex marriage, however, would be only one small step toward improving the lives of already oppressed members of the LGBTQ community.
A professor of English at Mills who has written and spoken on the importance of addressing LGBTQ issues in the classroom and on college campuses, Mance is also a member of the Gender Identity and Expression Subcommittee at Mills College. She serves on the board of directors for the EDEN LGBTQ Youth Foundation.
